On behalf of the ECC Presidency
of Belgium the European Co-ordination Council of ISOC held a joint meeting
with the EU Commission DG Information Society in Brussels on September 7th
to discuss Information Society policies and issues. User-representatives
were invited to participate.
Chairman
Mr Richard Delmas of DG INFSO
welcomed the participants and stressed the continued interest of
the Commission in user-issues and made particular reference to the widely
accepted ICT User MOU from 1996. Co-Chair Jacques Berleur of ISOC-Wallonie
and ISOC-ECC also emphasized that user needs have to be considered.
Mr
Christopher Wilkinson, Advisor DG INFSO on European Internet Policies,
informed about status and progress of the new ccTLD .EU and the consultations
taking place at the various political institutions of Europe.
Mr.
Loic Damilaville, Director CVFM, explained the creating of value
with the DNS and gave special advice on the socio economic advantages for
the users.
Dr
Jon Thorhallsson, President of CECUA, the only independent European
umbrella organisation of 17 national European Computer Users Associations,
presented socio economic issues on user-requirements from a political view
necessary to create an European Region of trust and confidence for an eCommerce
of over 400million customers.
Ms
Sophie Le Pallec from MEDEF, the Enterprise organisation of France,
explained a parallel development by supporting user-needs to achieve
the enormous economical advantages in forcing the competition with an
innovative approach. This will also mean a great push for the motivation
of users by education.
There was a general feeling
that the time was ripe for a new MOU on a Region of Trust and Confidence
for eCommerce in Europe.
