Dr.
Jon Thorhallsson, European Consulting Partners, founder and CEO will
join the representation to the ICANN Government Advisory Committee as an
expert advisor.
ICANN or "The Internet
Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers" is the non-profit corporation
that was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address space allocation,
protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server
system management functions previously performed under U.S. Government contract
by IANA and other entities.
The ICANN Government Advisory
Committee or GAC allows countries to influence policies concerning the management
of the DNS and related functions, which are important to the overall operation
of the Internet. The GAC seeks to incorporate the diverse views, laws and
policies of many different countries and distinct economies in its advice
to ICANN.
In his letter of nomination
the Honourable Mr Sturla Bodvarsson, Icelandic Minister of Communications,
made reference to Dr. Thorhallsson's distinguished carrier in business,
academia and public administration in Canada, Germany and Iceland.
Dr. Thorhallsson said that
he was pleased with the appointment. " The GAC involvement will allow me
to continue and expand upon my present Internet related activity at the
EU level focusing on user issues including a multilingual and multicultural
Internet" he said.
